Minis

Information

Welcome to the OCRFC Minis Section. A lot has changed since the Minis section started in 2002 and we now have well over 300 boys and girls across the age groups. We maintain an inclusive and fun ethos and are proud of our reputation as a family friendly club.

What is MINIS Rugby?

Mini Rugby is designed to introduce children to the basics of the game in a safe environment, and in line with their physical abilities and at their own pace letting them run, chase, throw, catch and learn teamwork. Boys and girls play together and on an equal footing throughout the whole Minis section.

Age groups generally correlate to school years – Year 1s play in U6s, Year 2 in U7s and so on.

Under U6’s, U/7s & U8’s The main aim is to have fun while developing basic skills such as passing backwards, catching a pass, and running into space and of course, scoring tries!  The players wear a belt with 2 velcro tags and a tackle is made when the opposition pull one of the tags off the ball carrier. There is no contact (tackling, scrums) or line-outs or kicking in these age groups. The size of team on the pitch increases each year.  U6s do not play fixtures with other clubs, U7s and U8s attend ‘festivals’ – exciting multi club competitions where they play lots of short matches against other clubs.

U9’s – U11’s : Transition to contact, through tackling, starts at U9s, with other aspects of rugby introduced each successive year through U10s-U11s and after that in the Juniors (after Minis). Squad numbers, length of game and pitch sizes also increase each year. The teams graduate to our equally active Juniors section as U12s, at which point girls and boys play in separate teams.

How can my child take part?

Training is on SUNDAYS from 10am – 11:30am

From first Sunday in September to last Sunday in April

U6s are always at home at Old Colfeians, other age groups are home first and second week of September which is the ideal time to come down.  Please contact minis.chairman@ocrfc.co.uk if your first visit is after these first weeks in September as some teams may be playing away from home.

We offer 2 free Sunday sessions to newcomers as part of our ‘Turn up, play… we hope you stay’ approach’.   It’s a great chance to test out the sport, meet the rest of your team and get a feel for our friendly community.

We understand that paying for your child’s membership can be difficult at times and we have options available that might be of assistance, including paying by instalments and a club fund which can subsidise part or all of a player membership fee should they qualify.

Please see here https://www.ocrfc.co.uk/registration-and-membership-for-2056-26-season/ for details of fees, membership, registration and support.  Contact minis.chairman@ocrfc.co.uk with any queries.
