WARM UP

I joined Old Colfeians RFC in 1998 as a 22-year-old who’d just moved to London. I played for 9 seasons in my first stint at the club, including captaining for 2 years when we were in the national leagues and came back for a season as a player-coach, then 3 more seasons as DoR. I played for all the teams in the club, from 3rds, to the 1’s and latterly, the Vets, too.

THE GAME

What’s your business?

My business is called webpi, and I build websites for literally anyone who needs one. I work directly with clients myself and over the years have also been hired as a contractor, which led to working with some huge brands such as Panasonic.

I’m also the host of The Amateur Rugby Podcast, which has seen steady growth over the years, and it’s something I’m very proud of.

Who do you help?

Most of my business comes through the rugby network, and actually, a large percentage of that is from the Colfeian network. I built the OCRFC site, as well as the Horn Park site, and I’ve built websites for many other Colfeians.

HALF TIME

It was our first year in the National Leagues and our first trip down to Cornwall. We were to play the high-flying and international packed Cornish Pirates at the Mennaye Field. Club captain James Griffiths couldn’t make the trip, so it was actually my first competitive game as skipper.

We enjoyed a few lucky Guinnesses on the train on the way down on the Friday night, and were like excited kids as we took the field. The stadium announcer played ‘Momma told you not to come’ over the tannoy, and to a man, we were laughing as we ran to our places.

I wasn’t much of a talker as a skipper, but I summoned some West-Country passion and got everyone fired up for the kick off – essentially I told everyone to forget about the ball and just smash whoever was in front of them! And to my amazement, not only did we do that, but it actually worked. We got them a little rattled and a 14-7 deficit at half-time was a remarkable success.

The Pirates scored about 50 unanswered points in the 2nd half, but for a time there, we were really living the underdog dream.

2nd HALF – Case Studies

Success Stories:

The availability system for OCRFC. Players get emailed the upcoming fixtures and can fill in their availability online. The coaches can then pick teams on the backend and send confirmation emails. This has recently been extended to allow sending of messages to WhatsApp
