Old Colfeians started strongly in their clash against Beckenham, setting the tone early with powerful carries and quick ball around the fringes. Their early dominance was rewarded when Freddie Holland-Oliver powered over from five metres out, finishing off a sustained spell of forward pressure. Moments later, he repeated the effort with another trademark close-range finish to give Old Colfeians a well-earned early advantage.
Beckenham, however, showed their experience and composure as the game went on. They began to control possession and territory, using smart kicking and patient build-up play to shift the momentum. A couple of well-taken tries and accurate penalty kicks saw them work their way back into the contest, steadily turning the tide.
Despite a determined defensive effort and flashes of attacking promise from Old Colfeians, Beckenham managed the latter stages well, keeping control and denying any late comeback.
There were plenty of positives for Old Colfeians to take, particularly the physicality and intensity shown in the opening quarter, but it was Beckenham’s game management that ultimately proved the difference.
