On what will hopefully be the wettest day of the season, the OCRFC U16s travelled to Gillingham Anchorians for our eagerly awaited first game of the season.
After a brief warm up, kick off was upon us. Gillingham were an unfamiliar opponent, so we had no idea what we would be up against. The opening encounters were as expected with the conditions. The slippery ball caused problems for both sides but eventually Gillingham crashed over for the first score of the game.
We didn’t give in, some crunching tackles from Kieran and Luke saw Gillingham get frustrated in our 22. The tale of the first half was simple, we had to do a lot of defending. As anyone will tell you, it is very hard to defend constantly so we went into the break a few scores down, but plenty to be happy about. We’d put in some good hits, our rucking was aggressive and Gillingham certainly knew we weren’t going to roll over.
The second half was much different. We saw much more of the ball and were able to put some phases together ourselves. Finally, some brilliant backs play saw debutant Will run in for his first score in OCs colours, hopefully the first of many. Again, Gillingham kept the ball well despite the conditions and forced us to make tackle after tackle.
The final score certainly didn’t reflect our resilience and spirit to fight back in the second half. A big well done to all the boys for sticking with it in that rain. Special mentions to MOTM Will, skipper Luke for some big hits and Jake similarly. We have plenty to be proud of and we can hold our heads high.
