A great morning with heavy rain making for a slippery surface, ideal for the renowned style of rugby OC’s U17’s play. After a focused warm up the boys made their way to the top pitch and immediately started strong with some positive patterns of play and Frank making polite chit chat with his opposite man at their first line out.
OC’s had a scrum in our own half on the stroke of 8 minutes with resulted in Harry Taylor running down the blind after several phases of play to outpace the opposition and score the first try with Christian Hooper converting for the extra two points. The next 20 minutes went by with both sides tussling for territory and possession without huge success or points to show for their hard work, the weather being a good leveller at this stage.
As the boys approached half time they seemed to up the gears and maintain possession without any handling errors which resulted in a series of scores by Leo Cunningham on 27 min again converted by Christian. The team caught the restart well and made their way down the pitch leaving Christian to score a try which is was unable to convert. Dover restarted again and the forwards again made their way down the pitch with good rucking and tactical kicking resulting in Christian scoring his second try of the game but unfortunately failed to convert for the extra two points by striking the upright from a wide angle.
No changes were made at half time with the score standing at 24-0. It wasn’t long before the pack were back on top with surging runs by Leo, Oliver and Dan resulting in Murray who played very well at scrum half scoring and converted by Christian. After the restart OC’s completely dominated the game especially in open play, however the boys squandered numerous scoring opportunities in the corner to extend the lead further. Eventually after a couple of phases of play without handling errors Elliot broke through the defensive line and scored, unfortunately Christian failed to convert the extra two points.
The game came to a halt with Luke (our very own neutral ref) calling both coaches over to explain that Dover would have to play the rest of the game with only 14 players, so with the game already won or at least very secure by this stage, we also agreed to play with 14. A number of substitutions were made and it wasn’t long before Christian scored his third try of the game which is dually converted. With the game won OC’s were breaking the opposition defence at every phase of play culminating is the final score by Frank under the posts after several off loads in the tackle.
The final score stood at 50-0! Despite the weather, OC’s played some exciting rugby but with only 17 fit boys to select from, the score could have been different if the opposition had been somewhat tougher. U17’s need to attend Thursday evening training and build on what is a great start to the season. The team would like to thank Luke Walden for refereeing the game and welcoming back Simeon Horner.
