Cage Fighter, Pat Vickers, raises £1,500 for Wol

It was with a degree of trepidation that this reporter headed to the wilds of north London last Friday. After acclimatising with a couple of pints, we took the plunge and walked to the Kentish town forum for an event known as "Cage Warriors... Young Guns"

Now I wasnít certain what to expect from the evening. Obviously I assumed that the audience would mainly be in tracksuits and there would be somewhere to park your pitbull, but there was a slightly different aspect to this particular Cage fight: one of the combatants was our very own Patrick Vickers. This ensured two things, firstly that I would travel across London to make sure it was really happening and secondly, because Pat is both a Colfeian and one of those "city types", there would be a better class of clientele in the auditorium. There were about 12 fights on the card and our man was due on 7th so we had a bit of time to soak up the atmosphere and get tucked into the buffet. The first few fights seemed spritely enough to me, a bit of blood was spilt and the crowd were getting lively. I then found out that these were the amateur fights and just a warm up for the pros and semi pros and our man was next up in the first semi pro fight. Pat was fighting Andres Filas at welterweight. It says on the website that Filas started well but Pat fought back with a takedown then passed to half guard and worked intelligently. Now I donít know too much about this, but LD seemed confident that he had done enough to win and so it was proven when he got the decision. The victor said a few nice words about the bloke he had just beaten up then, and - this is the point of the article ñ described Wol as the bravest man in the place that evening. Pat, in an extremely generous gesture, had already said he was going to donate his purse, and also his portion of ticket sales to Warrenís fund. A total of just over £1500. The rest of the evening passed in the usual fashion of a few beers and then a bit more. Felt dreadful the next day. Itís a tough old game, this cage fighting.
