Weekend update

A great 34-32 away win for the Firsts at Chobham with a makeshift team ignoring the the fact that well over the half the "recognised first choice" team were unavailable. Five tries, including 3 between the centre pairing of Jealy and Burto, were too much for a useful Chobham team.

Meanwhile, hard lines for the 2's at home against Sidcup. Hoping that Sidcup might have knackered themselves out from an hour's worth of vigorous warm up drills, it was sadly not to be our day. We came up against a well drilled and beefy pack with a spectacularly efficient line out and basically suffered from not winning enough possession throughout the game. We gave them two easy scores in the 2nd half and going down to 13 men is never going to win you games. The way we came back at them towards the end to grab the last try was very pleasing. Great to see Hogger back playing and other notable performers were young un's Hugh Mac, Alex Clubb and a great solo run from Gallagher. A special mention also to Big Gav for his 1st half interception and length of the field run.....I'm not sure whether it was more a case of Gav coasting or their prop being really keen... Chin up Gav. The Vets continue their record of no wins this year going down 19-30 at Greenwich!! The defeat was not helped with losing 3 players to injury during the game. Rupert commented: "Absolutely fantastic win for the 1's on Saturday away at Chobham, to inflict only the 2nd home defeat on an opposition who have some real threats in their side. We led for the vast majority of the game, despite conceding an early try, and with 4 minutes of 'normal' time left the score stood at a handsome 34-18 margin. Chobham then came back at us, but we were not the be denied and took the points back to Horn Park. Considering the excuses we could have found if we had lost, this was one of the best victories this season and sets us up well for what is probably one of the most challenging weekends of the Season. On Saturday we host 2nd placed Dover and then on Sunday a Kent Cup Quarter Final game against Blackheath, both games at home. I'm awaiting the 2nd team report with anticipation so that we can look to put out 2 strong sides over the weekend. There is no 2's game on Saturday and I'm really looking to see as many of the 1st and 2nd players putting their hands up to play in both games this weekend. It will be a tough weekend and we need as many people as possible to show that they are 'proper Colfeians' and tick the available box. Final thought on the weekend: Haggis made the comment that back rower Pete Burton who, while playing at outside centre and scoring a superb try, proved what all forwards already new in that playing out wide is much easier than in the forwards. You might not be able to argue on Saturdays evidence, but if that is the case then surely Alan Bateson showed us that perhaps playing in the front row is not as hard as Haggis and the rest of the front row union might have us believe!?"
